The Asia Foundation’s Let’s Read! project in Cambodia stimulates the creation of original, openly licensed books in Khmer. The project leverages the popularity of smartphone technology to foster a new generation of storytellers and increase access to books that entice children to read.
គម្រោងតោះអាន! របស់មូលនិធិអាសុីនៅប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ជម្រុញអោយមានការបង្កើតស្នាដៃដើមជាភាសាខ្មែរ ដែលមានអាជ្ញាប័ណ្ណបើកទូលាយ។ គម្រោងនេះ ប្រើប្រាស់អនុភាពនៃប្រជាប្រិយភាពរបស់បច្ចេកវិទ្យាទូរស័ព្ទ ដើម្បីបណ្ដុះបណ្ដាអ្នកនិទានរឿងជំនាន់ថ្មី និងបង្កើនភាពងាយស្រួលក្នុងការទទួលបានសៀវភៅ ដើម្បីជម្រុញអោយកុមារអានកាន់តែច្រើន។
The centerpiece of the initiative is a series of hackathon events that gathers individuals from a variety of industries to create high-quality children’s stories. At the intensive, one-day events, teams comprising of writers, artists, graphic designers, and coders collaborate to develop a set of children’s e-books. This method drastically reduces the time and resources needed to produce beautiful, illustrated children’s books.
ចំនុចសំខាន់នៃកិច្ចផ្ដួចផ្ដើមនេះ គឺជាព្រឹត្តិការណ៍ hackathon ដែលប្រមូលផ្ដុំបុគ្គលពីវិស័យផ្សេងៗគ្នា ដើម្បីបង្កើតសសៀវភៅកុមារដែលមានគុណភាពខ្ពស់។ ក្នុងរយ:ពេលមួយថ្ងៃ ក្រុមការងារដែលរួមមានអ្នកនិពន្ធ វិចិត្រករ អ្នករចនាទំព័រ និង អ្នកសរសេរកូដ ធ្វើការជាមួយគ្នាដើម្បីបង្កើតសៀវភៅអេឡិចត្រូនិចសម្រាប់កុមារ។ វិធីនេះជួយកាត់បន្ថយពេលវេលា និង ធនធាន ក្នុងការបង្កើតសៀវភៅដែលមានរូបភាពស្រស់ស្អាត សម្រាប់កុមារ។

HACKATHON
One-day book creation events
Creative teams develop a book prototype over an intensive 11-hour period. Writers finalize stories, illustrators develop detailed storyboards and finished covers, and designers and coders create attractive e-book templates.

Storybooks for all
No more than two months after the hackathon, the illustrated stories are finalized and digitized. E-book and print-ready versions are made available to online libraries, both domestic and international.

About Let’s Read!
An initiative of The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program, Let’s Read! fosters young readers in underserved communities in Asia. The project incubates innovative digital, print, and community-based solutions to improving access to high-quality children’s books in mother tongues and national languages. In addition to its e-book initiative in Cambodia, Let’s Read! is helping minority communities develop their own collection of storybooks through a suite of mobile apps.
